Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner visited LabourLove

LabourLove was honored to host treasury secretary Timothy Geithner during his tour of Golden Belt on February 18th. Congressman Price and Congressman Miller were also on the tour which was lead by Andy Rothschild. Mr. Geithner revealed to us that his own photography helped him pay for college, but that he doesn’t get a chance to pursue it much anymore. I guess fixing the economy is higher on his “to do” list these days. He talked to Lori Vrba about her current show “Safekeeping,” and he almost seemed relaxed for a few minutes as the conversation shifted away from business to the arts. This just goes to show that everyone needs a little art in their life.

John, Kelly, Porter, and Geithner

Friday, February 19th @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Third Friday – “Safekeeping” by Lori Vrba

This third Friday come to see the incredible work by Chapel Hill photographer Lori Vrba.

2009 was a breakout year for Lori. She recently finished a solo show at the prestigious Lishui Photo Festival in China, and participated in group shows in London, New York, Colorado, and Atlanta among others during the year. Her “Safekeeping” series won her critical acclaim at the Photo Alliance Review in San Francisco, and the Atlanta Celebrates Photography Review. She was also featured in the magazines “Shots,” “Burn,” and “File,” and plans to make a solid impression on FotoFest in Houston in March. If you want some local approval to go along with the rest, one of her pieces won Best in Show at The Arts Center in Carrboro in the summer.

If you’ve been thinking about diving into collecting art and photography, now is the time, and Lori is the artist to invest in. Small prints in extremely limited editions start at just $300 so you can afford to fill your portfolio. Her work will only be available for a few more weeks so don’t wait too long to come by.

Morning by Lori Vrba

The first one in December was a smashing success, and we’re back for round two. In case you missed it, the slam consists of three, 20 minute rounds. The audience contributes ideas, and we randomly pull one from a hat. The artists create their best interpretation of the suggestion, and we auction off the artwork at the end of the night. In December, attendees walked away with original art for as little as $45! This is live action art with paint flying and imaginations on overdrive. This time we’ve got a few new twists including an Iron Chef like “secret ingredient” for one round. This is the most fun you can have at an art gallery. We’ll send out an email toward the end of the month with details on the artists, and a friendly reminder.

The slammer’s are:
Dave Alsobrooks is the Durham Art Guild’s current Artist-in-Residence at Golden Belt in Durham, NC. He is a mixed-media artist working in traditional and emerging mediums and has exhibited his work throughout the Carolinas, New York, Chicago and London. Dave is a partner at The PARAGRAPH Project, also in Durham. He shares a house and fenced yard with his wife and four high-maintenance dogs.

Kelly Dew graduated from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied painting. Kelly is known for her intense acrylic color on board with an eclectic mix of subject matter. She is the owner and curator of LabourLove Art Gallery in Downtown Durham, NC. Kelly was recently a guest on WUNC’s The State of Things with Frank Stasio, and she is quickly establishing herself as a major force in the North Carolina art scene.

Luis Franco received his Bachelor of Arts in Art at North Carolina Central University with a concentration in Visual Communications and a Certificate in Multimedia at The School of Communication Arts. Franco primarily works in the digital environment but also paints. His artwork tends to focus on social, political and cultural issues which he express’s through bold colors and iconic imagery.

LabourLove Gallery will host a public reception for Safekeeping as part of the Third Friday activities at Golden Belt. The gallery will be transformed with lights strung across the ceiling and more than 40 photos available for view and purchase. As always, we’ll have our heat press working, and our giclee prints from previous shows for sale.

Jason and Renee from Here’s To Brewing will be on hand for samplings of:

1, 2, 3, Floor Export Stout (7.5 %ABV; 58 IBUs)

A Foreign Export Stout style ale that is smooth and flavorful yet very drinkable. It also packs a punch. Drink too many and you will wind up on the floor much more quickly than you expect.

ESB (6.3 % ABV; 32 IBUs)

This Extra Special Bitter showcases the mild sweetness of the hops with the bitterness of mild hops that provide some spice and citrus flavors to the beer. Exceptionally refreshing and another great session beer in the lineup.

Plus, we’ll have a cash bar with wine and cocktails provided by Triangle Catering. Did I mention they’re great neighbors?

Kelly and John will be on the RADIO!!!

“The State of Things with Frank Stasio” on WUNC sent us an email this morning with the subject line, “Would you like to be on the radio?” My first instinct was to throw it in the JUNK folder thanks to my years of experience in the techie world. One of the cardinal rules of email spam is – if you don’t who its from and the subject sounds to good to be true, its probably junk. Against my better judgement, I opened it, and there was an invitation from the senior producer of TSOT. I quickly hit the REPLY button, and said YES! When? A few minutes passed. Then a response. ”This Friday from 12:20 pm to 12:40pm. I’ll call you tomorrow with details.” So, tune in people. You never know what’s gonna come out of Kelly’s mouth. (sshhhh… she’s a little nervous.)

Also, we have a HUGE announcement that we’re going to make live on the air. Let’s just say that LabourLove and it’s artists will have some new walls to cover in a very prominent Durham location in the coming months.

Lori Vrba

Lori Vrba

We’re very excited to introduce Lori Vrba to North Carolina. She moved to the Triangle with her family a few years ago, and she’s been quietly building an international resume right in our back yard.

She was also featured in the magazines “Shots,” “Burn,” and “File.” If you want some local approval to go along with the rest, one of her pieces won Best in Show at The Arts Center in Carrboro in the summer.

We’re giving you two opportunities to meet her in person. The first is an intimate dinner at LabourLove where she will give a brief talk on her work. The second will be during our Third Friday opening reception.

If you’ve been thinking about diving into collecting art and photography, now is the time, and Lori is the artist to invest in. Small prints in extremely limited editions start at just $300 so you can afford to fill your portfolio. If you’re a more seasoned collector, you’ll recognize the opportunity all on your own. Just come and see for yourself.

February Preview: Sunday, February 14

Music, Art, and Dinner in The Cotton Room

Looking for a romantic dinner for Valentines Day? Chef Dodd Aldred and his wife, the Triangle’s hostess with the mostess, Michelle Aldred of Triangle Catering will be cooking up some sweet love in The Cotton Room. Musical entertainment will be provided by Green Hill recording artist Jamie Paul whose debut album At Last hit #1 on the iTunes jazz charts in the fall. She has a voice smoother than butter that will melt your heart and set the perfect mood for romance. Finally, we’ll curate a special art show to complete the evening. More details to come!

Daniel states, “this is a personal exploration of my surroundings in various places. I’ve challenged myself to find beauty no matter where I am. These photos are my way to get acquainted with my new home in North Carolina.” In addition to his fine art photgraphy, Daniel Pesta is a one of the area’s premier event photographers. Visit him at http://danieljpesta.com to see his incredible portfolio.

The Rock & Shop Market is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience; an indoor fashion, art & music flea market featuring emerging, independent local and national designers selling their wares plus live music by local performers.

Started in 2004 by Michelle Smith, a local designer and online boutique owner, Michelle wanted to create a local market that would help support and celebrate the burgeoning indie arts scene of professional designers, artists and musicians in the Triangle and beyond. In 2008, Regan Wood, a jewelry designer, came on board to help produce the event. Collectively, they are known as sprout & flourish and, in addition to producing The Rock & Shop Market events they offer creative design & marketing services to boutique and emerging businesses.

ArtSLAM! with Dave Alsobrooks, Owen Beckman, and Kelly Dew

LabourLove Gallery plans to turn the local art scene upside down in the area’s first ever Art Slam. Inspired by urban Poetry Slams, where performance poets are given a shot to compete at the mic with the spoken word, LabourLove’s Art Slam will do the same with local artists using paints, pastels and whatever medium inspires them.

Attendees will drop a concept in a hat and a lucky idea will be chosen to have the artists duke it out and create, in a 20 minute timeframe, their interpretation of the idea. Attendees will choose their favorite piece by applause and have a chance to bid on the works at the end of the night. This fast-paced, highly creative, energetic event will showcase the process of putting ideas on canvas and offer a glimpse to the artistic journey.

This is an article Destry Sparks wrote for the Arts Alive Magazine talking about the upcoming show in November! Thanks Destry for the wonderful article and for co-curating the show! The article is featured in the November/December issue.

A group exhibition of contemporary artists with ties to Eastern North Carolina will exhibit their work from November 20th to January 15th at LabourLove Gallery in Durham on the Golden Belt Arts campus.

The show will feature adventurous work incorporating unconventional and rough materials. Innovative mixed media pieces will be the norm including paintings with metal parts, sculptures both small and large, and diverse fiber works incorporating figurative ceramics and raw natural objects.

Originally from Rocky Mount, gallery Co-Owner Kelly Dew will contribute her precise mixed media paintings. Frequently adding metallic and wall papers to the surface, viewers can expect a bounty of the rich colorful images she is known for. Dew is a graduate of the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. However, with relatives from the small town of Grimesland in Pitt County, she has strong ties to the region still home to many of the participating artists.

Other painters involved are Destry Sparks of Greenville and Emily Soldin Howard, a 2009 graduate of the East Carolina University MFA program. Sparks will display his unconventional outsider acrylic works which highlight worn found objects attached to burlap instead of traditional canvas. By using rough grades of burlap and harshly textured items such as driftwood and rusted metal parts a particularly visceral effect is readily apparent on the surface of his paintings. Opening earlier in the month at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta, Sparks will also participate in the National Collage Society 25th Annual Exhibition. Howard’s work is similarly unique in that her paintings feature objects embedded into her surfaces to the degree that a thick murky stew of stuff entices the viewer to take a closer look.

Fiber artists Pamela Zimmerman of Washington and Jennifer Hodges of Wilmington provide a wonderful compliment to the deep browns in the works of Sparks and Soldin Howard. Zimmerman’s distinctive moon faces are unmistakable and powerful regardless of the scale she chooses to tackle in a given piece. Her solitary ceramic souls peer from intricately woven fibrous cocoons. A 2009 NICHE award finalist, Zimmerman is making waves nationally. Hattlestad is well known to Eastern NC art patrons for her days on the staff of the Greenville Museum of Art and for producing remarkably understated sheets of fiber embedded with natural objects such as leaves and twigs.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the approach of Philadelphia sculptor Joshua Parker Coombs. A 2009 MFA recipient from ECU as well, his remarkable work is stunning both in terms of technical achievement and bold authentic content. Whether in large rusted metal pieces or in brightly colored intimate polished wood pieces, the common thread is his ability to bend diverse materials to his liking to fashion objects which seem to live, breathe and even quiver in their desire to reach out toward us.
LabourLove Gallery is a new contemporary art gallery housed at Durham’s hotbed site of creativity known as the Golden Belt Arts campus. The show will debut on Friday, November 20 in the midst of 35 on-site artist studio spaces, artist lofts and a vibrant Durham Third Friday Art Walk tradition.
Owen Beckman Unique Handmade Tables

Owen Beckman is a MFA Graduate from East Carolina University and is currently represented by Flanders Gallery in Raleigh, NC. All of Owen’s tables are 100% eco-friendly and one of a kind! LabourLove will display three sample tables in the gallery. In keeping with the eco-firendly theme, Owen builds his tables to order reducing waste and allowing him to customize each table for its owner. We love his work and think that you will too!
