Kim Arrington sang publicly at 4 years old. By 7 years old, Kim was writing her own songs. In May 2008, Kim released her debut CD of soul music, “First Love Note of Kim Arrington”, which United Kingdom-based Soul Brother Records described as, “Very good, lyrically- strong, independent soul album featuring real instruments from North Carolina singer-songwriter Kim Arrington, who possesses a really strong, unique voice.“ She has sung for tens of thousands in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, England, France, Austria, and Germany. NPR’s Frank Stasio declares, “Kim Arrington proves her pipes are as soulful as her prose.” In 20l2, Kim will release her debut jazz CD, “Getting II Yes”.

The Art of Cool Project presents a monthly concert every third Friday featuring a variety of musicians ranging across idioms – from acoustic to electric, bebop to free jazz. On Friday, December 16, 9:30pm at LabourLove Gallery in downtown Durham, NC we will feature renown smooth jazz saxophonist Marcus Anderson.

About Marcus Anderson:
After his breakthrough in contemporary jazz circles as the 2009 winner of the Capital Jazz Fest Challenge, Marcus Anderson is embracing every opportunity to perform and inspire fans – and most importantly, as the title of his third and latest CD attests, fully living in the NOW. The multi-talented composer, saxophonist, flutist’s, and choreographer has had a powerful ongoing development of his career and his move toward the top tier of contemporary jazz has been unmatched. With the release of NOW, his third solo CD, and fourth release “Tender Loving Christmas”, Anderson’s goal is to capture the energy from his live shows and make this collection of music his most dynamic, joyful and creative recordings yet.

At Bull City Mobile we develop mobile applications that can: get you connected to you customers; offer you an opportunity to improve your business and online presence; and reach out to a larger market than you could ever reach with traditional advertising. We create mobile based solutions on multiple platforms that will meet your needs and exceed your goals. We bring big ideas to small buttons.

The Art of Cool Chair Campaign:
In the spirit of Christmas, gift giving, and supporting local charities, The Art of Cool Project (our jazz advocacy group) will be holding a Holiday “Chair” Campaign during the party. Every month the AOCP promotes local talent and one of the monthly costs incurred is chair rental. We’ve held a series of sold out concerts and have realized that these monthly concerts will continue to happen and grow. We’d like to buy chairs in lieu of renting them thus eliminating the rental costs each month. The AOCP’s chair campaign is much like sponsoring a brick. A sponsorship of $40 gets your name put on the back of a concert chair as well as premium/preferred seating to any show in the future with RSVP. If you are a small business and would like to sponsor a chair, you may put the name of your buisness along with your website on the back of the chair. Our goal is to get 20 chairs sponsored in order to buy 80 chairs.

In honor of Mr. Guy Wilkins:

We would like to take a moment to honor a labourlove collective artist, that has been a part of our lives for the past two and half years and part of our memory forever, Mr. Guy Wilkins. Guy passed away early November.

John and I had the pleasure of meeting Guy Wilkins early in our art gallery adventure. From the moment I met Guy I liked him, we bonded immediately and I knew that I needed to show his work in the gallery. ”Perpetual eMotion” debuted Oct.15th, 2010 at LabourLove Gallery to a room full of 65+ paintings. Guy was old school, he was what we talked about in art school and aspired to be, he painted and painted and then painted some more, everyday no matter what the day was like. He understood what it was to be a working artist, he lived it and most importantly he shared it. Guy always supported us and told us to keep going even when we weren’t so sure, he was our fun loving 84 year young cheerleader and we are thankful, very thankful to have worked with him.

Ira Guy Wilkins Jr.

Jan 7, 1927 – Nov 5, 2011

Guy Wilkins was born at Seaview on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and raised in Norfolk. He graduated from Maury High School in 1944, served in the Coast Guard for two years and attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for three years. He married Margaret Wakefield Ruffin of Norfolk in 1947. Guy worked as a reporter and photographer for several newspapers in the South, for the Norfolk Port Authority, and then as Publicity Director at the Norfolk Museum, now the Chrysler Museum. Guy studied art during the 1960’s with Lindsay Ocheltree of Norfolk, and painting became his life’s work. He moved to the coastal fishing village of Wachapreague on the Eastern Shore in 1971 and lived there 40 years. Guy was devoted to his mother, Margaret Nottingham Wilkins, and cared for her at Wachapreague, along with his little dog Sally. Guy spent much time with daughter Sarah in Chapel Hill, NC and daughter Elizabeth in Yorktown, VA. Daughter Kate and son John, both of Melbourne, Australia, often visited.

Guy’s bold, vibrantly colored expressionist paintings achieved recognition throughout his career, with countless exhibitions in North Carolina and Virginia–and in New York City from 2004-2008. His works are found in private collections, galleries, and on the internet. In his art Guy was a storyteller and an explorer of imaginative realms. Those who knew him will miss his quick wit, his joie de vivre, and his special gift for connecting with people.

Guy succumbed to complications of CML Leukemia at Riverside Medical Center, Newport News, VA on Saturday, Nov 5. Family: daughters Sarah Gay Wilkins, Elizabeth Wakefield Wilkins, Katherine Taylor Wilkins, and son John Guy Wilkins; sons-in-law Marston Youngblood, Jacques van Montfrans, Brad Bowen; daughter-in-law Suzanne Wilkins; grandchildren Schuyler Guy van Montfrans, Clare van Montfrans, Mati John Wilkins, Max Bowen-Wilkins, Katherine Ellen Wilkins, Nicholas John Wilkins; great-grandsons Levi Wilkins and Coen Guy van Montfrans.

Date: October 21, 2011

Time: 9 pm – Midnight

Location: LabourLove Gallery, 807 E Main St, Building 2, Durham, NC 27701

Transcending genre distinctions, SHANA TUCKER is a “ChamberSoul” cellist and singer/songwriter from New York who’s set on blazing a trail for herself down in North Carolina. Her music is a sultry pastiche of acoustic pop and soulful, jazz-influenced contemporary folk. “It’s different, yet comfortably familiar…I love 80′s music and I’m a sucker for jazz. Many of the grooves have a bossa-nova/latin heartbeat, translated through percussive vocal phrasing. I can’t deny the classical training; it inspires my cello sensibilities…but I like the thump of walking blues & old-timey bass lines. It’s like a delicious coffee blend: bold and robust, with subtle undertones of bittersweet…and something you can’t quite place, but it’s still good!” she says with a smile.

Shana’s debut solo project, slated for an early 2011 release, outlines a musical journey that indeed celebrates the major influences of everyday life: relationship, laughter, love…loss, rediscovery, and the never-ending journey towards heightened levels of peace, understanding and self-acceptance and satisfaction. “The most important thing I want to take away from this process is a musical truth,” she explains. “If I effectively do my job as Artist, (genre) cohesion will come from the ties that bind these experiences.”

Shana’s music indeed speaks for itself through well-crafted lyrics, subtle, lingering melodies, and compositions that boast a unique, satisfying blend of humor and gravity. Tell somebody about it…this girl’s music is something worth sharing, worth keeping, worth hearing more of.

LabourLove Collective Welcomes New Artists, 6 pm – 9 pm

Claudia Corletto

I was raised in Houston, Texas. I began writing in elementary school. After taking a screenwriting class in 2003, I realized my talent as a storyteller. While searching for an affordable (free) artist to do the cover art for my first book, frustration led me to be creative and design the cover myself. Since then my life has been one beautiful challenge after another and art has been my therapy.

Nan Nixon

As Monty Python famously put it, “And now for something completely different” probably best describes my decision to try painting after a long career representing universities in Washington, DC. Once discovered, the challenge, the surprise and the satisfaction of painting has kept me returning to the easel. Simply put, I paint because I love it.

Using acrylics, I work in a realistic style. Although I naturally tend to focus on detail, I have found that I prefer to paint in broader strokes both with the brush and the palette knife. I often paint seascapes and landscapes that reflect the extraordinary colors found in nature, which painting and its study have enhanced my ability to see. Cloud shapes, the movement of water and the subtle colors of snow continue to intrigue me and increasingly I am drawn to painting scenes with a misty/mysterious feeling that I feel take them beyond the actual images represented.

Since 2006, I have taken courses in drawing, Chinese brush painting, botanical watercolor and, more recently, acrylic painting.

Wyn Easton

I fell in love with painting around the end of my thirty-three year career with IBM. I now live the artist’s life.

Painting outside, en plein air, is where I draw my greatest inspiration. Plein air painting is one of the toughest ways to paint. Nature throws a lot of obstical and information my way. I don’t always come some with a keeper, but when I do, it makes me feel very satisfied.

I hope you enjoy my painterly style of painting.

Ellie Edwards-Smith

Paintings that embody emotional nuances and the human experience

Durham artist, Ellie Edwards-Smith, enjoyed a career in financial management in NY and NC. Currently, she continues to take classes and make art full time. She works in oils, acrylics, and watercolor which gives freedom to choose the best medium to convey the subject. Her style is representational with impressionistic overtones. She strives to engage the viewer and promote discussion. Ellie has won awards including a Vermont Studio Center residency/grant, and juried exhibits with the Durham Art Guild and the Fine Arts League of Cary. She has had several North Carolina solo and group exhibits including the Cape Fear Studios and Rocky Mount National Juried Exhibits, Cary Gallery of Artists, Duke University Medical Center, Durham Art Guild, Durham County Attorney’s office, Durham Mayor’s office, ERUUF Gallery, Raleigh Fine Arts Society, UNC Women’s Hospital, and Galleries in Westchester County, New York.

The Peru Project, 6 pm – 9 pm

The Peru Project aims to promote literacy, education, and the arts for the children and their families of rural Huaripampa, in the Andes Mountains of Peru. By building this community center, we hope to inspire others to dream, whether it be those in Huaripampa or those closer to home.

A silent art auction at Labourlove Gallery during the Durham Third Friday Art Walk will be held to raise funds for this worthy casue! Please come out and bid on great works to help us ‘raise the roof!’ There will be art from many generous Triangle artists, including many from Labourlove Gallery and both co-founders, Renata and Kyla McConnell. You can preview the works on The Peru Project’s Facebook Page!
This a free event for all ages!

He is an integral figure in the current local jazz scene having performed/recorded for local artists such as Mavis Swan Poole, Yahzarah, Peter Lamb and the Wolves (Voted 2011 Best Jazz Band in the Triangle), Clay Aiken, Big Daddy Kane, Orquesta Gardel, The Beast, and Zakiyah.

Strong got his first exposure to jazz while attending the esteemed Duke Ellington School for The Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. There he not only received mentoring by some of the best-known names in jazz such as Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, and Terrance Blanchard; but, he also gained performance experience at the world’s biggest Jazz Festivals such as North Sea and The Montreaux Jazz Festival.

Strong is an alumnus and current adjunct professor at the widely acclaimed North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Jazz Studies program. He considers his academic experience at NCCU under the direction of Dr. Ira Wiggins to be one of the most positive forces on his career today. Strong also has attained a Masters in Jazz Performance from Northern Illinois.

Strong has spent time on local jazz scenes in Chicago, D.C., and abroad; however, he still considers Durham to be one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the country, and as so made it his home. Strong’s vision is to stay true to whatever style or genre of music he is asked to present, while still honoring the integrity, and spirit of the elders/ancestors who sacrificed so much to see that good music would always have an audience.

Free Beer! Here’s To Brewing Returns to LabourLove

Jason Salemme returns after a prolonged break to share his amazing home brew with our guests for Third Friday.

The following brews will be available:

Labour of Summer’s Love Hefeweizen (6.5% ABV; 21 IBUs)

This Hefeweizen is brewed with pineapple and creates a nice tropical twist to the German ale. Named in honor of LaborLove Gallery this is a perfect thirst quencher during the hot days and nights of summer..

ESB (5.0% ABV; 32 IBUs)

This Extra Special Bitter showcases the mild sweetness of the hops with the bitterness of mild hops that provide some spice and citrus flavors to the beer. Exceptionally refreshing and another great session beer in the lineup.

Experimental (5.75% ABV; 14 IBUs)

This ale is a hybrid of styles to highlight various wheat and malt flavor profiles. It is brewed with just enough mild hops to balance the malt sweetness. Come try it out and let me know what you think!

Welcome New Artists

LabourLove is continuing to grow and we have added more artists to the collective. But we have room for more! We don’t take the saying”build it and they will come” lightly, we are planning on building out more walls/shelves/clothing racks so that we can grow the collective. If you are interested or might know someone that is, you can find all the information here: Join the Collective.
