Peter Lamband the Wolves is a group consisting of some of the triangle’s hottest young jazz musicians.  The quintet plays music that is a mixture of Charles Mingus like arranging with New Orleans grooves and strange melodies from around the world.  They’ve won The Independent’s Jazz Band of the Year award and played in both The Hopscotch Music Festival and Shakori Hills.  In 2011 The Wolves released their first album to much acclaim. They hope to produce a second album by the middle of 2012.

LabourLove is adding more artists to the collective! Come and check out the space and fill out an application today! For application and more information visitwww.labourlove.com.
The Idea

  1. Give artists, designers, and crafters space for a reasonable monthly price, and let them keep 90% of the retail sale.
  2. Everyone in the collective takes an active role in promoting the gallery and its events through their existing Email lists, Facebook friends, Twitter followers, Etsy fans, etc.
  3. The efforts of a large group of artists spending just a few minutes per month reaching their personal networks can equal thousands of potential customers for everyone to share.
  4. We all have fun playing a role in the growing art scene in downtown Durham.

The DealArtists keep 90% of the retail sale from all items.  LabourLove will use the other 10% to cover credit card processing and basic business expenses related to gallery operations including accounting and marketing costs.

LabourLove supplies clothing racks, shelving units, and wall space for the display of the artwork and goods.  The artists will supply the inventory and rent the space required to display their works.  This is YOUR space to display your work as you wish.  The most active participants in the collective tend to sell the most product.  Art is just like any other business, if you come to the events and promote the gallery to your network, you are more likely to sell your work.

Labourlove is excited to announce that our new neighbors have moved in and the spaces look fantastic! Come out this third friday and meet the nice folks from Moshi Moshi and Blend.

Blend scheduled to open late January 2012. Blend will offer Counter Culture Coffee, light breakfast and lunch fare sourced locally or prepared in house from local ingredients and frozen yogurt. Moshi Moshi, has outgrown their space in Chapel Hill and Durham was a natural direction to go as they have always had a loyal Durham following.  Join us in welcoming these new businesses to Golden Belt and downtown Durham!Read this nice article in the Triangle Business Journal for more information!

Our Neighbors at Dogstar Tattoo are in the NY Times!

Kathryn Moore

Kathryn is a local hailing from the Durham/Chapel Hill area. She is a Durham Academy graduate that went on to attend Carnegie Mellon to earn a BFA in Fine Arts. Her concentration was in sculpture, specifically metal working. Afterwards she continued her education at Comair Aviation Academy receiving her Multi-Engine Commercial and Certified Flight Instructors licenses. After flight school she began tattooing and has been doing so since 1995. She is the owner of Dogstar Tattoo.

Information about the event:
Friday, January 20th from 2 until 5pm. As part of the ScienceOnline2012 convention, Carl Zimmer will be at Dogstar for a book signing celebrating his new publication Science Ink. We’re welcoming visiting scientists from the convention for an afternoon of science based tattooing, and Carl will be giving a presentation on his book. Here’s a link talking about the book and you can find Kathryn’s work on slide #4.

Here’s a little about Stephen.

STEPHEN ANDERSON, composer and pianist, has had works performed by the West Point Military Academy Band, West Point Jazz Knights, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Montclair State Wind Symphony, Crested Butte Chamber Orchestra, UNC Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, the One O’ Clock Lab Band, Two O’clock Lab band, North Carolina Central University Percussion Ensemble, UNC-Charlotte Percussion Ensemble, UNC Wind Ensemble, Duo XXI, and a film score broadcast nationally on PBS.

Anderson has received two awards from the Barlow Endowment—most recently a commission to compose a piano concerto for Steven Harlos (pianist, Dallas Symphony) to be premiered by the UNC Symphony Orchestra (April 2010), and previously a commission for the West Point Military Academy Band (2005).  Other awards or recognitions include:  finalist in the West Point Jazz Knights Composers Forum competition (2011), Honorable Mention from the International Society of Basses composition contest (2002), Junior Faculty Development Award-UNC Committee on Faculty Research (2008), the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, the UNC Research Council, the “Village Pride, Hometown Hero Award” from 1360 WCHL Chapel Hill Radio (2008),Endeavors magazine feature (2008), and reviews in All about Jazz, Jazz Times, and the All Music Guide (2008), and the PAS Percussive Notes (February 2009).

As a pianist, Anderson is a recording artist for Summit Records, and the Stephen Anderson Trio has just released its second recording for Summit, “Nation Degeneration.”  The trio’s previous CD, Forget Not (2008) received 4½ stars (out of 5) from the All Music Guide, was nominated best jazz “Debut CD” (3rd Annual Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll 2008), and has been widely performed on radio nationally and internationally.  Previously, Anderson was pianist with the Lynn Seaton Trio, appearing on two recordings for Nagel Heyer Records, Puttin’ On the Ritz (2005) and Ballads 2006.  Anderson performed with the North Texas One O’clock Lab Band (Lab 2001) and Two O’clock Lab Band (Translucent Two), was winner of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival piano competition (1997), and was the keyboardist for gold-recording (country) artist, Kevin Sharp (1996-1997).

Anderson holds a D.M.A from the University of North Texas (2005), served as Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano at Western Illinois University (2003-2005), and is currently Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Jazz Studies and Composition.  He studied composition with Cindy McTee, Joseph Klein, Tom Clark, Joseph Butch Rovan, Phil Winsor, and Paris Rutherford at UNT, and Stephen Jones, David Sargent, Michael Hicks, and Murray Boren at BYU.  He studied jazz piano with Dan Haerle and Stephan Karlson at UNT, Dan Waldis at BYU, Gary Freeman at Eastfield College, and Wilson Brown at Ricks College.

LabourLove will be teaming up with our friends at Bull City Craft for this coming third friday.  Come bring the kiddo’s and participate in a craft project with owner Jessica Greene.  The craft project will be one of Bull City Craft’s most popular, watercolor postcards. Paint it, collage it, color it, and then send it!   It is guaranteed to be a good time!

What happens to a giant blank canvas when you turn it over to a rowdy crowd? One thing is for sure, it’ll be fun to find out! Everyone is invited to participate from the experienced artist to the person who has never touched a brush to canvas. No rules. No preconceptions. No hesitation. Just Paint.

LabourLove will provide a huge 4′ x 8′ canvas, brushes, paint (yellow, blue, red, and white), and a blindfold for the truly daring. Participants are encouraged to bring their own special touches and supplies like stencils, specialty paints, markers, oil sticks, found objects, etc. to contribute to the finished product.

If you missed this event last Saturday, come out this friday and paint!  Help add to the “Lighting McQueen Red” that our son/personal assistent painted.

Saturday, March 12 · 7 pm – 10 pm : “Magic and Mystery” Second Saturday at LabourLove with magician/artist “Magic Mike” and book reading from Yuri’s Brush with Magic by writer/artist Maureen Wartski.

Book reading from 7-8, Magic Mike will perform throughout the evening.

Bring the whole family, and join LabourLove for a night filled with magic and mystery.  Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite magical character.  Muggle garb (casual dress) is also acceptable. Our first party was a huge success with over 200 attendees.  Check out the photos here and here to see our wonderful patrons dressed up and enjoying the evening.

Michael Casey will perform tricks that will leaving you breathless while author Maureen Crane Wartski will read from her latest children’s book, Yuri’s Brush with Magic. In addition to their talents in performance and literature respectively, Michael and Maureen are participating artists in the LabourLove Collective.  We also would like to take this opportunity to welcome five new artists to the collective:

Michael was born in Baltimore, Maryland and during his upbringing often times found himself in gifted classes. During the 1980′s his family moved down south when his father enlisted in the Marines to help his struggling family. It was during this time that Michael found the mystery, beauty, and magic that is the south.

During his academic career at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and a strange series of events, Michael found his way into magic and he has not looked back since. Spending several years studying magic from the US, England, and even Japan. During this journey, he has found his own unique style.

Michael started his professional magic career in 2002 serving as the house Magician for Maggiano’s Little Italy in Southpoint, the house magician for The Mellow Mushroom on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, and he now resides as the featured entertainment at The Crunkleton on 320 West Franklin Street. Michael has quickly become one of the most sought after magicians in the triangle area for his unique and organic style of magic.

As word of his magic has spread, he has been hired to engage audiences all over North America. From Vancouver, to San Francisco, to Chicago, and Boston, just to name a very few, he has become a staple in Corporate Cocktail hours and exclusive After Parties. Michael has performed exclusive magic for American Express and Yep Roc Records and he has even shared the bill with such musical acts as Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, Unknown Hinson, The Rosebuds, American Aquarium, and many, many more. Maureen Crane Wartski:

Maureen is a local fine artist and award-winning children’s book author.  Her newest book for kids, Yuri’s Brush with Magic, is about finding the magic in everyday life and discovering the creative power of art. “Four Winds at the Four Winds Bar” with artists: Luke Miller Buchanan and Lincoln Penn Hancock

LabourLove will be making some big changes in the new year. We will be transitioning to a collective gallery model in early February. It is no coincidence that we are having our last show with one of our friends, artist Luke Miller Buchanan. Luke will be showing with new artist to the gallery, Lincoln Penn Hancock in a show inspired by 70′s rock band, The Blue Oyster Cult.

The Artists Statement:

In the summer of 2010, Luke Miller Buchanan and Lincoln Hancock realized theyʼd both been working on distinct pieces informed in different ways by the same thirty-five year old rock album. Blue Oyster Cult’s 1974 LP, Secret Treaties, had made its way quite literally into Buchanan’s painting, “And Most of You Have Gone Away.” And Hancockʼs video piece (with Miles Holst) for Block2, “Radios Appear,” took its title and conceptual mettle from “Dominance and Submission,” the third song on the record.

As they considered direction and theme for their upcoming show, Buchanan and Hancock riffed on the subtext of their shared inspiration. The work in this show digs at the clandestine and excavates the abstruse, in places, moments, and scenarios lived and felt. Each artistʼs work, in its own way, attempts to capture the resonances that inform our specific experience. Encounters with the world often are determined by factors not materially manifest. Whether these qualities of experience are shaped by what we bring to the exchange or the revelation of forces unseen, they form the emotional basis for our meetings with the world.

“Four winds at the four winds bar” is a lyric in the last song on Secret Treaties. The song deals explicitly with the mystic intents and agendas that riddle the world as we see it. But the phrase, taken alone, evokes something like a transitory moment, a place through which meanings and messages pass like the breeze. It also conjures a respite — a familiar place that lures seekers. Luke Miller Buchanan and Lincoln Hancock take haven at the Four Winds Bar, and their recent work represents their distinct yet complementary impressions on whatʼs happening in the plenitude outside.

LabourLove Gallery is honored to present the works of artist Guy Wilkins.  Guy has been painting perpetually for 30 + years showing primarily with Amsterdam Whitney Gallery located in Chelsea, New York and in galleries around Virginia and the mid-Atlantic States. Guy studied art in Norfolk VA, while working in journalism and public relations in the 1960’s. He is a member of the Orange County Artists Guild.
