Moshi Moshi: The Moshi Moshi Cut-A-Thon!

On June 15, from 5pm – 9pm, the Moshettes will offer walk-in only appointments for haircuts, makeup applications and bang trims at our Durham location in the Golden Belt Arts complex. Services will be paid for by donation only and 100% of the proceeds will go to SEEDS!
SEEDS is a non-profit educational community that uses gardening and growing food to teach respect for life, for the earth and for each other. Beyond providing Durham with beautiful community gardens, SEEDS has been supporting young people in the area by providing safe and supportive environments where kids can explore, play, and learn with lots of positive attention from adults. Since 2003 SEEDS has offered free afterschool programs and affordable summer camps as well as a youth-driven entrepreneurial business in which teenagers grow produce, herbs and flowers to sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market.
SEEDS seeks to be a truly grassroots organization, one that is funded directly by the community out of which it grows. As members of that community we would like to show them how much we love what they’re doing through our Cut-A-Thon!
Would you be interested in contributing to this great cause?
As a part of our fundraiser, we will also be holding a raffle to win gift certificates and prizes from businesses in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. We are hoping that you might help make this event a success by donating a prize to our raffle.
If you have any questions about the Cut-A-Thon or if you’d like to donate, please contact Kate at Moshi Moshi Golden Belt by responding to this email or by calling 919.564.1272.

Mint Julep Jazz Band

Poster by FRANCO

With their little big band lineup of 4 horns, rhythm section, and vocalist, the Mint Julep Jazz Band recreates the hot jazz sounds of the 1920′s and 1930′s through arrangements based on original recordings from the jazz age and swing era. Formed in 2011 by trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist Laura Windley, the Mint Julep Jazz Band features some of the Triangle’s best young, professional jazz musicians, such as trumpter Al Strong, Aaron Hill and Peter Lamb on saxophone and clarinet, Jason Foureman on bass, Aaron Tucker on drums, and Jared Wofford on guitar. While this may be your grandpa’s jazz, you’ve probably never heard it performed live like this before – the Mint Julep Jazz Band strives to create an authentic early jazz experience that will transport you back in time, while moving forward with a fresh take on this music to give it a new life in the 21st century.

Third Friday – April

Third Friday at LabourLove! 6-9pm

Welcome Bull City Craft and new artist, Calvin Brett to the collective!

Bull City Craft outpost at LabourLove! The arts and craft shop Bull CIty Craft will be selling a select assortment of art supplies, books, and items to inspire your creativity at LabourLove Gallery. We are excited to partner with Bull City Craft!  The owners, Franklin and Jessica will be participating in our third friday event  with a kid friendly activity. They will also have information about kids birthday parties and classes available at their shop located at 2501 University Drive in Durham.

A little more about Franklin and Jessica:

Jessica Greene and Franklin Santana opened Bull City Craft shortly after their daughter Frances was born. Inspired by a friend’s craft store and studio in Brooklyn, Spacecraft, they decided Durham’s creative community needed a similar place for buying and making beautiful things.

Jessica was an art major at UNC and has a Masters of Education from NC State. She was an art teacher in Durham Public Schools and has taught classes at the Durham Arts Council and the Scrap Exchange. She brings her expertise about art materials and her experience teaching children and adults to Bull City Craft.

Franklin is the guy to go to if you need help choosing a perfect gift. Franklin worked for many years in a leather store in New York City and has great stories about the characters and celebrities who shopped there. He also worked for a wholesale company, Kikkerland, that provides our Leuchtturm journals and many of the fun gift items in the store.

Welcome New artist, Calvin Brett!

Calvin Brett
Calvin Brett:
My work deals with making sense out of an abstract expression of self. When I first started painting I was drawn to color. Ignoring form I would begin each piece by putting color on boards wherever it instinctively seemed fit. After a while, from the chaos I would begin to make out abstract figures which I would then attempt to clarify for others to see. In retrospect, I realize my work was essentially me creating a Rorschach test then bringing to light whatever it was that stood out most for me. The pieces which best represent this idea are found in a series of images I made inspired by the sun called Sol.
The sol series was me playing with the thought that by following my soul, regardless of the amount of formal training, my work would then shine like the sun.

As my painting skills develop, rather than seeing things as flat, I see environments where abstract patterns make up the textures which bring any object to life. When viewing my work, form always takes a back seat to my use of color and the way the same color may be repeated multiple times in different representations. Just as I try to build up patterns per surface, I also attempt to make it so that the work as a whole itself is connected by some greater pattern. An example of this is in the piece, “Lake Shore Drive” where though each surface has its unique pattern, the overall painting has a greater pattern as well.

I still work in the form of Rorschach meaning that with a lot of my pieces, as I create them, I know little of their significance only to return to them months later to realize they reflect everything I was feeling at the time of creation. I paint for myself and strive to connect with the inner workings of my being. I hope through painting things I find interesting, others will be impacted in a similar way.

“Show Us Your Heart” Art Show and Sale

“Show Us Your Heart” Art Show & Sale, a benefit for the David Turner Lymphoma Foundation brings together a diverse group of people – non-profit volunteers, artists, transplant survivors, families, students, educators, business leaders, and more. The aggregate of tiny donated artwork gives a peek inside the big heart of the Triangle, creating a beautiful mosaic with a message worth hearing.

All of the small canvases (4” x 4”/6” x 6”) will be given out according to a two tier system.

Tier 1: For each $20 donation, the donor receives a random number that is assigned to one of the canvases which he/she then receives.

Tier 2: For each $50 donation, the donor may pick any available canvas.

All proceeds of this benefit will provide arts’ experiences for those isolated in stem cell transplant units at Duke and UNC hospitals. More information about the arts in healthcare can be found at thesah.org. To learn more about the work of this local nonprofit, go to bigdavesbiggift.org.
