Focsi
Fosci

Focsi (pronounced Fox-cee) is comprised of J. Phillip & Erika Smith, a husband and wife team with a slightly nomadic history, who like to challenge and display traditional standards of beauty and feminine strength/power with a twist in an unexpected, thoughtful, and celebratory way via fine art prints, canvas, or portraits. Empowering women with the message: You Are Beautiful Just As You Are (YABJAYA!)! We do commission pieces by request.

Collaboratively, we started Focsi (pronounced Foxy), and turned that into an art and apparel business. Our images are placed on t-shirts and other items. We participated in various art shows, gallery showings, Artomatic, as well as live art demonstrations for various events.

J. Phillip Smith has been creating art since birth, and has a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University. Mr. Smith has worked on Illustrations, apparel design, participated in various art shows, and completed a multitude of commission pieces. While Erika Parker-Smith is a spoken word artist, an avid self taught crafter, and “glitterati”, cuz everything needs some sparkle with an eye for fashion and great design.

Welcome New Neighbors, Salutations, to Golden Belt

Salutations at Golden Belt

Salutations opens shop at Golden Belt!
LabourLove Gallery is happy to welcome new neighbor, Salutations to Golden Belt!

Come out this Third Friday from 6pm-9pm and check out their beautiful new location. Here is a little bit about the move from the Salutations blog:

We have some big news! The Salutations boutique in Chapel Hill will be relocating to Golden Belt in Durham as of January 2, 2013.
After ten years in Meadowmont Village in Chapel Hill, we are looking forward to this next chapter in the evolution of our business and to providing an even more exceptional experience for our customers.

In addition to the change in location, the boutique will have a somewhat different feel as well. In its new space, Salutations will be primarily focused on custom wedding invitations, event invitations and personalized stationery, as well as select personalized gifts. Items carried on hand will be refined to a carefully curated selection of note cards, greeting cards, gift wrap, gift books and calendars that represent the “best of the best” offered by exclusive designers.

For more information about the move, read Durham Magazine’s article.

Welcome New Artist
Karen Archia, Anna Maxfield & Belinda Paige Blakley, LabourLove Collective

Karen Archia
Karen Archia

Karen Archia is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but has firmly planted southern roots, having lived in the Triangle since 1984. She has worked at WUNC-TV as part of the Public Affairs team, and as a public relations professional, most recently at the National Education Association’s state affiliate in North Carolina.

“The “behind-the-scenes” work of TV production was great fun, and working in public relations for a non-profit was very rewarding and offered a creative outlet, but neither left much room for authentic self-expression. “I felt I was losing my own voice and identity since I was constantly writing for and about other people, or seeking to inform or persuade a certain audience for a particular reason not of my own making. After many years of presenting the thoughts, experiences and feelings of others in words and images, I realized I wanted to share my own feelings and ideas in a visually compelling, dynamic and non-objective manner.

“I have been painting for a while as a secret hobby, but have been encouraged by fellow artists to share my work more widely. It’s certainly a struggle to be this vulnerable, but it feels right.”

Girlina by Anna Maxfiled
Girlina by Anna Maxfield

I have always been inspired by iconic women from different genres, decades, and places. I admire the strength, playfulness, individuality, and style of such women as Erika Badu, Missy Elliott, Twiggy, Grace Jones, Adele, Diana Ross, Madonna, and Lucille Ball. I aim to capture this essence in Girlina, my line of jewelry designs. I like mixing soft and hard materials which comes through in my use of fabric, metal, and wood. While I aim for my jewelry to make a bold statement, I pay close attention to comfort and wearability and intentionally pick materials that are extremely lightweight. I love modern, clean lines, with retro and textured patterns. Imperfection is something I genuinely embrace when it comes to women, so my earrings rarely match perfectly and all designs are one-of-a-kind or one of a very limited series. I also like little surprises and I try to pick unexpected colors and textures to back the earrings. Girlina earrings are lightweight, make a statement, and are handmade in Carrboro, North Carolina, by Annie Maxfield.

Belindabilly by Belinda Paige Blakley
Belindabilly

Belinda Paige Blakley graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a concentration in Fashion Design and Fiber and Materials Studies in 2010. As a self-identified feminist, Belinda has always found the feminine form something to be celebrated rather than hidden; this idea is a foundation of her design process, always striving to create interesting clothing for real women that is wearable and flattering. Belinda founded Belindabilly in 2007 as a socially and ecologically responsible company, offering high quality, eco-friendly clothing, and sourcing only fair-trade and organic materials.

October Third Friday, 2012

Welcome New Artist
Julia Freifeld, LabourLove Collective

Julia Freifeld

Julia Freifeld

I’m an eclectic artist that believes every image is a narrative. Landscapes, abstractions, and portraiture tell a story.

When I paint a portrait, I strive to capture likeness, the spark of personality, and inner and outer beauty, unified by a harmonious composition of color and shape.

My landscapes are painted in oils on canvas or watercolor using nature as a starting point. I may experiment and abstract the image, yet retain the feeling of nature. Other landscapes are more representational.

I’m a classically trained fine artist. My degree is from Boston University, School of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking.  Following graduation, I worked as a scenic artist in film, T.V., and Walt Disney studios. I taught art to children in the public schools, was an illustrator of a poetry book called “Lifelines” as well as illustrated a CD called “Rhythms From Another Summer” by Jeremy Lev.

My work focuses on commissioned portraits, landscapes, and abstract design utilizing all water-media and oils.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and moved to Raleigh with my husband Mark and three children in 1996. I have a studio at Blake St Studios in downtown Raleigh.

Boomerang is a series of environmental portraits taken in various towns within Australia. The images feature residents of Australia that are not the typical subjects of photographic portraits.

“I really wanted to focus on the people that are easily and often overlooked in everyday life.  The woman at the coffee shop, the railway worker, the hotel employee – these are the subjects of my photographs, and they truly were some of the most interesting people I met in Australia” said Courtney Johnson.

For more information, contact Courtney Johnson at 919-333-3902 or courtneys.johnson@gmail.com.
