Third Friday at LabourLove! 6-9pm
Welcome Bull City Craft and new artist, Calvin Brett to the collective!
Bull City Craft outpost at LabourLove! The arts and craft shop Bull CIty Craft will be selling a select assortment of art supplies, books, and items to inspire your creativity at LabourLove Gallery. We are excited to partner with Bull City Craft! The owners, Franklin and Jessica will be participating in our third friday event with a kid friendly activity. They will also have information about kids birthday parties and classes available at their shop located at 2501 University Drive in Durham.
Jessica Greene and Franklin Santana opened Bull City Craft shortly after their daughter Frances was born. Inspired by a friend’s craft store and studio in Brooklyn, Spacecraft, they decided Durham’s creative community needed a similar place for buying and making beautiful things.
Jessica was an art major at UNC and has a Masters of Education from NC State. She was an art teacher in Durham Public Schools and has taught classes at the Durham Arts Council and the Scrap Exchange. She brings her expertise about art materials and her experience teaching children and adults to Bull City Craft.
Franklin is the guy to go to if you need help choosing a perfect gift. Franklin worked for many years in a leather store in New York City and has great stories about the characters and celebrities who shopped there. He also worked for a wholesale company, Kikkerland, that provides our Leuchtturm journals and many of the fun gift items in the store.
Welcome New artist, Calvin Brett!
As my painting skills develop, rather than seeing things as flat, I see environments where abstract patterns make up the textures which bring any object to life. When viewing my work, form always takes a back seat to my use of color and the way the same color may be repeated multiple times in different representations. Just as I try to build up patterns per surface, I also attempt to make it so that the work as a whole itself is connected by some greater pattern. An example of this is in the piece, “Lake Shore Drive” where though each surface has its unique pattern, the overall painting has a greater pattern as well.
I still work in the form of Rorschach meaning that with a lot of my pieces, as I create them, I know little of their significance only to return to them months later to realize they reflect everything I was feeling at the time of creation. I paint for myself and strive to connect with the inner workings of my being. I hope through painting things I find interesting, others will be impacted in a similar way.
