People interest me most and I study and paint them to capture these complex times. It is a candid view of the inhabitants of the late 20th and early 21st century. I like to tell stories in my art and I look for character, emotion, and often humor in my subjects. My figures have been called quirky, which I take as a compliment.
I consider myself an expressionist painter. Although I paint the real world it is a very imaginative interpretation. Elements are altered and exaggerated. My colors are not the colors of nature. Features are abstracted—a single line may express the gesture of an arm or leg. My work verges on fantasy as I reinvent the familiar, with a tinge of surrealism. I aim for unusual compositions and the dynamic effects of color juxtaposition. I want every brushstroke to count.
