Elizabeth Lee

In my professional life I was a teacher of English literature and writing, a reader of narratives by others, but for the last thirteen years, I’ve looked out at life and endeavored to capture what I see and understand with paint and pencil. This environment of visual activity, with its elements of light, shapes, colors, and its dynamic composition, has simply swept me into a new way of experiencing the world. In my art, I work primarily from life and pursue a representational approach. Now I look for the story I might tell and find challenge and pleasure in the search.
I have studied with many fine artist-teachers and I am also influenced and inspired by painters as diverse as Velasquez and Degas, Rembrandt and Manet, Loomis and Morandi. Today there are many gifted classical and contemporary realist painters who preserve the best of the traditions while bringing a modern spirit to their work and I constantly learn more by examining their drawings and paintings. My art life invigorates me as I continue to explore the deceiving simplicity of the still life object and the hidden complexities of each person with the hope of revealing something of their special qualities in my work.
