In my paintings, animals always take on a pivotal role. Sometimes the animals I paint are simple portraits, and other times they are more symbolic. In my series “Optimal Foraging”, birds are chained to the pharmaceuticals which they hunt for. Birds are often used to represent freedom, but the repetitive display of these birds foraging for pills illustrates dependency and loss of freedom, just as the pharmaceutical companies want. I made this series as a way to vent my frustrations, which are at their worst when I am faced with an advertisement for medication while watching television or flipping through a magazine. First we are told we might have a problem, and then these simple capsule solutions are offered to us without the benefit of any expert advice.

I grew up in Connecticut and studied Illustration at the University of Connecticut. After earning my BFA there, I moved to Durham, NC in 2007, and have been continually impressed with and inspired by the local art scene ever since.
